How to Secure Your Dream Role by Impressing at a Video Interview
Video interviews have been growing in popularity in recent years, as a means of embracing technology to facilitate the recruitment process. In the current unusual global situation, they are being used more frequently than ever.
So, if you are an HR professional who is looking to secure a new role, you need to understand how to make a good impression at a video interview. With this in mind, there are some important points to bear in mind.
Dress as you would for a face to face interview
It may be tempting to think that you do not have to pay as much attention to your appearance if you are attending a video interview. However, this is a mistake to make. It’s always important to think carefully about what you should wear for an interview whether you attend in person or by video.
It’s a good idea to choose business dress that does not feature bright patterns or stripes. This is because certain patterns can be distracting and can cause interference with the clarity of your appearance on video.
Keep eye contact
Maintaining eye contact is not as easy during a video interview as it is when you are attending an interview face to face. It’s tempting to look at the video feed but to look the interviewer in the eye, you need to look straight into the camera. If you do not do this, it will seem as though you are looking in a different direction.
This will make you seem disinterested. Obviously, this is not an impression you want to make if you are hoping to be successful at an interview.
Make sure that you are interviewed in the right place
The last thing you want is to be interrupted during your video interview. If you do not want this to happen, you need to ensure that you choose the right interview environment. If you have created a home office environment, this is easier to do. The most important thing about the environment that you choose is that it’s quiet and distraction free.
Be prepared technically
The quality of a video interview experience is partly dependent on the technology that is used. For this reason, it’s essential that you test the technology that you will be using before the interview takes place. Ideally, you should also have backup equipment available.
If there is any problem with the connection during the interview, ensure that you make the interviewer aware. You should also check that you have fully understood a question if the audio is not as clear as it could be and you are unsure about what you heard.
End the interview in the right way
If you are hoping to secure a role as an HR manager, the ending of an interview is important, no matter whether the interview is face to face or by video.
You should summarise your main points. You should also ask any questions that you may have and make sure that you understand what is going to happen next.
Ensuring that you pay attention to all of these points will give you a better chance of impressing at a video interview.
