Interview tips for HR professionals

An interview is a 2-way process.  An employer will evaluate the impact you could make to their business and have will have a chance to find out more about the role, the company, and its culture.

HR Recruit has put together some top tips for interview success:

Do your research

To be successful at an interview, you need to do your homework. Research its achievements and why it’s unique. Make sure you visit the company website, google the company name, read some media coverage and, if you can, find out their company culture.

Interviewers will know immediately if a candidate hasn’t done any research and it will leave a bad first impression.  By doing your research, it will prove you are serious about the job.

Review your CV

When you’re in an interview, you need to really bring your CV to life.  Know your CV inside so you are able to cite parts of it to your potential employer. Show how your achievements and experience relate to the job, including citing key examples that show what key skills you can bring and what sets you apart from the other candidates.

Dress to impress

You need to make a great first impression, so take an extra few minutes to make sure you making the impression that you want. In other words, ensure you are polished, well dressed and professional.  You may be penalised for being too scruffy or even looking too smart.

Don’t be late

Being late is a sign that you are not serious about the opportunity.  If you are serious, obviously you will be on time, and ready to sell yourself.  Ensure you know here you are going and the time it takes to travel there. Always add in contingency time, just in case.

Be clear in your answers

It’s a good idea to take a moment to consider exactly what the interviews are looking for so your answers illustrate your strengths in this area.  Draw from past examples of your work and highlight your achievements.   Expand on your reply, but avoid waffling and giving a never-ending answer!

Ask interesting questions

This is your chance to demonstrate your interest in the position.  Ask questions that show you have thought about the company, its goals and future direction.  Ask questions that show you can visualise yourself in this role, exceeding expectations and making a difference to the company.
